Pediatric dentistry
Pediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry responsible for examining and treating children. They are also responsible for detecting anomalies in the position of the jaw or teeth and if needed refer them to a specialist in orthodontics, or restorative treatment.
Restorative treatment mainly consists of treating injuries, or using sealants that are applied to fissures of teeth without removing enamel to avoid dental caries. They also treat cavities and its consequences if affecting the pulp by placing crowns of different forms to restore the function and aesthetics to children. If needed the extraction of a tooth may occur if they are unable to rehabilitate it. Oral appliances are often used, for example retainers that are placed to retain space, in order to treat harmful habits like thumb sucking, to correct an anterior open bite, or to help with habits like tongue thrusting.
