Surgical removal of wisdom teeth
Due to differences of size between the jaw bones and teeth, the third molars (also known as wisdom teeth) do not always manage to completely evolve and erupt that can generate difficult access in the oral cavity causing food accumulation and difficult plaque removal by patients.
One should extract third molars or wisdom teeth when they are or can produce:
- Damage to the neighboring teeth (caries, with/or root absorption).
- Infection and abscesses, a situation that can be so severe that it can cause the patient to be hospitalized.
- The formation of cysts and/or tumor that can grow aggressively leading to the need for the patient to receive a larger operation.
- Acute and/or chronic orofacial pain.
- More susceptible to a mandible fracture due to a hit or trauma.
- The eventual crookedness or change of position of the teeth due to the pressure associated with the wisdom teeth.
- Orthodontic indication.
